Howard University is a private, federally chartered, historically Black research university, located in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1867, Howard’s legacy stands on its commitment to reduce inequalities and serve as an “engineer of change” in American society. Howard is highly regarded for its STEM programs, College of Medicine and School of Law, and it is known for its rigorous education. The National Science Foundation ranked Howard as the top producer of African-American undergraduates who later earn science and engineering doctoral degrees. Notable alumni include former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Emmy Award-winning actress Phylicia Rashad, Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morison, and award-winning actor Chadwick Boseman.

Ranked 79 nationwide, Howard is well known for providing excellent undergraduate education. A selective school, its acceptance rate is 35%. Howard’s tuition rate is $28,450 per year, plus fees. Over 11,000 undergraduates and postgraduates attend. The university’s 13 schools and colleges offer over 50 undergraduate degrees and programs, plus graduate degrees in more than 30 disciplines and 100 specializations. Howard follows a semester-based academic calendar.

Committed to its school motto, “Veritas et Utilitas” (Truth and Service), Howard prides itself on its commitment to rigorous education and service to the community. Howard students perform hundreds of hours of community service each year, and, of all historically Black colleges, Howard has produced the greatest number of Peace Corps volunteers; plus, its School of Law has produced more than 4,000 social engineers, who are dedicated to effecting change in American society. With America’s capital city at their fingertips, plus dozens of student clubs and Greek organizations, students have ample opportunity to build their community, engage in fun activities, and grow as learners and leaders.
