Located in Coral Gables, FL, the University of Miami (UM) is a private institution that was founded during South Florida’s real estate boom in 1925. UM is known for its research output, particularly in medicine and health, marine science, engineering, education, and psychology. Research opportunities are available to undergraduates. Notable alumni include NASA astronaut Daniel T. Barry, actor and wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Patrick Farrell.
Ranked 57 in the nation, UM is a selective school. Its acceptance rate is 33% and its graduation rate is 84%. UM’s tuition rate is $54,705 per year, plus fees. Over 17,000 undergraduates and postgraduates attend UM. Twelve schools and colleges make up the university, offering nearly 350 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. UM follows a semester-based academic calendar.
Located in a suburban setting on 239 acres, UM’s natural surroundings offer a balance to students’ rigorous study and research. Students can take advantage of popular outdoor attractions in South Beach, the Florida Keys, and Everglades National Park, or they can enjoy the vibrant culture and nightlife in downtown Miami. On campus, students can participate in over 300 clubs and organizations; 2,500 students are involved in nearly 30 fraternities and sororities. Freshmen are required to live on campus and can live in one of the school’s five residential colleges. Residential communities are modeled after those from England’s Oxford and Cambridge universities. This unique environment integrates living, learning, extracurricular activities, and even live-in faculty mentors. UM’s NCAA Division I athletic teams, the Hurricanes, compete in the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
