Students at UT Knoxville enjoy an urban setting. The campus sits on 910 acres, and Knoxville provides a thriving culture of entertainment, history, and festivals. When they’re not exploring the city, students might hike through the 1,000 acres of the Urban Wilderness Forest, or they might venture into the nearby Smoky Mountains. On campus, students participate in over 300 study abroad programs or 500 student organizations and clubs, which include more than 40 fraternities and sororities. The UT Knoxville sports teams are known as the Volunteers or Lady Volunteers – most refer to them as “Vols” for short. The teams compete in the NCAA Division I Southeastern Conference, and football season is a particularly big draw at the school. Students are so enthusiastic about their teams that, in 2017, they broke a record: 4,223 students formed the largest human letter – a giant letter T – in the Neyland Stadium field.
