The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private land-grant research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1861, MIT has made major contributions to the development of modern technology and science, making it a premiere institution with international regard. Notable alumni include former UN Secretary General and Nobel Laureate Kofi Annan, NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and Bose Corporation founder Amar Bose.

Ranked 1 in the nation, MIT is a very selective school. Its acceptance rate is 7%, and its graduation rate is 94%. MIT’s tuition rate is $55,510 per year, plus fees. Over 4,000 undergraduates are enrolled, making the undergraduate student-teacher ratio of 3:1. Nearly 7,000 postgraduates are enrolled. MIT is made up of six schools, which teach thousands of classes and offer over 50 undergraduate majors. MIT also offers over 40 postgraduate programs. It follows a 4-1-4 academic calendar, including two semesters and mini sessions in between.

At MIT, students become part of a supportive, engaging community, dedicated to rigorous study and discovery. Its urban, 168-acre campus is set along the Charles River, and it has ample green space to balance out the challenges of study. Over 500 student organizations are available, including about 40 fraternities and sororities. The unique Student Organizations, Leadership and Engagement Office (SOLE) runs programs for students to develop their leadership skills, test new ideas, and make a positive impact on the MIT community. Students also participate in over 30 varsity sports and more than 40 club sports teams. More than half of students enroll in arts classes every year. When students aren’t on campus, they might be exploring Boston’s rich array of historical sites.
