Spelman College was founded in 1881 in Atlanta, Georgia. As an HBCU, 98% of the student body are of minority backgrounds. Additionally, Spelman is a women’s college and 100% of the student body are women. The total undergraduate enrollment is 2,417. Spelman has been rated the number one HBCU and the seventh most innovative school in the country.
The student body at Spelman represents ten countries. The top countries represented are the Bahamas, Jamaica, Kenya, and the UK. There are also 43 states represented. A great number of students are from Georgia and Maryland.

While enrolled, students at Spelman have the option to study abroad. Students have traveled to more than 40 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America. The school also offers an honors college. The Githii Honors Program provides scholars an intellectual and creative outlet and allows students to engage with one another on and off campus.
Students can also explore 85 student organizations which include professional organizations, volunteer organizations, spiritual organizations, and recreational organizations.
Spelman is a private institution with an acceptance rate of 52.6%. Tuition is $28,181. About 85% of students receive some sort of financial assistance. Scholarships are awarded to 10% of each incoming class of freshman. The deadline for early action applicants is November 1st and the deadline for regular decision applicants is February 1st.
