Founded in 1867, the University of Illinois—Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is a public research institution located in the eastern-central cities of Urbana and Champaign, Illinois. One of America’s original land-grant institutions, UIUC is now known for its robust research output and its engineering and business programs. The school was also the first to provide disability access to all university services, curricula, and facilities. Notable alumni include YouTube co-founder Steve Chen and Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert.
Ranked 50 in the nation, UIUC’s acceptance rate is 63%, and its graduation rate is 85%. In-state tuition is $22,324 and out-of-state tuition is $42,796. A total of 56,679 students are enrolled, and the student to faculty ratio is 20:1. UIUC is comprised of 15 colleges and schools, which offer 135 undergraduate programs and over 200 graduate programs. UIUC follows a semester-based academic calendar.
UIUC’s campus sprawls across more than 1,700 acres. Notably, the campus’ many trees are home to a large squirrel population, which has become a unique and beloved feature of campus life. Freshmen are required to live on campus, and the university prides itself on its variety of housing options. When they’re not going to class, students might be participating in one of the university’s 1,600 clubs and organizations. Plus, students can choose from one of 87 fraternities and sororities, which make up one of the largest Greek systems in the country. Thirty cultural organizations are also available. UIUC’s Fighting Illini compete in the NCAA Division I Big Ten Conference. The university is home to over 20 varsity sports. Off campus, students can explore the local area’s restaurants and outdoor adventures. Or, students can take advantage of their proximity to the major cities of Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis, which provide excellent opportunities for weekend getaways.
