One of America’s original land-grant institutions, UIUC is now known for its robust research output and its engineering and business programs. Freshmen are required to live on campus, and the university prides itself on its variety of housing options. When they’re not going to class, students might be participating in one of the university’s 1,600 clubs and organizations. Plus, students can choose from one of 87 fraternities and sororities, which make up one of the largest Greek systems in the country. Thirty cultural organizations are also available. UIUC’s Fighting Illini compete in the NCAA Division I Big Ten Conference. The university is home to over 20 varsity sports. Off campus, students can explore the local area’s restaurants and outdoor adventures. Or, students can take advantage of their proximity to the major cities of Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis, which provide excellent opportunities for weekend getaways.
