Founded in 2005, the University of California—Merced is a public institution located near Yosemite National Park. It is the first American student-centered research university to be built in the 21st Century. Known for its commitment to increasing college access in the San Joaquin Valley, UC Merced has earned high marks for impacting social mobility. Notable alumni include Forbes-recognized musician and entrepreneur Shavone Charles and numerous environmental scientists.

Ranked 97 in the nation, UC Merced’s acceptance rate is 85%, and its graduation rate is 64%. In-state tuition is $28,638 per year, plus fees; out-of-state tuition is $59,664 per year, plus fees. UC Merced offers 26 undergraduate programs and 36 postgraduate programs. A total of 9,018 students are enrolled. UC Merced follows a semester-based academic calendar.

Located in the small town of Merced, the university offers students a close-knit community. Given that UC Merced is newly formed, students have the exciting opportunity to help establish college traditions. Plus, they can participate in more than 200 clubs and organizations – or start their own. UC Merced’s Athletics and Recreation program provides numerous fitness and sports programs. The university has eight varsity sports. Off campus, students can explore Merced, affectionately called the “Gateway to Yosemite.” Plenty of outdoor activities are available to students and faculty alike. The natural surroundings of Merced, which include Lake Yosemite, parks, and trails, give students a veritable playground to explore. The city is growing, offering many new boutiques, theaters and museums.
