Founded in 2005, the University of California—Merced is a public institution located near Yosemite National Park. It is the first American student-centered research university to be built in the 21st Century. Known for its commitment to increasing college access in the San Joaquin Valley, UC Merced has earned high marks for impacting social mobility. Notable alumni include Forbes-recognized musician and entrepreneur Shavone Charles and numerous environmental scientists.

Plus, they can participate in more than 200 clubs and organizations – or start their own. UC Merced’s Athletics and Recreation program provides numerous fitness and sports programs. The university has eight varsity sports. Off campus, students can explore Merced, affectionately called the “Gateway to Yosemite.” Plenty of outdoor activities are available to students and faculty alike. The natural surroundings of Merced, which include Lake Yosemite, parks, and trails, give students a veritable playground to explore. The city is growing, offering many new boutiques, theaters and museums.
