Founded in 1946, Binghamton University—SUNY is a public research institution located in Vestal, New York. The university is well known for its sustainability efforts, and its programs in management, history, public administration, and psychology are highly regarded. Notable alumni include co-creator of The Daily Show Madeleine Smithberg, Hollywood screenwriter Andrew Bergman, and ESPN commentator Tony Kornheiser.

Freshmen are required to live on campus, and the university’s residences offer free laundry. The Binghamton Bearcats compete in the NCAA Division I America East Conference. The student cheering section is known as the BU Zoo, which was formed to promote school pride and community. The school mascot is a bearcat named Baxter. Off campus, students can explore the suburban town of Vestal. The surrounding area has extensive opportunities for outdoor recreation. Binghamton connects students to these opportunities through their Adventure Resource Center and the Outdoor Pursuits program. Students enjoy kayaking, climbing, and camping. Skiing and snowboarding are also popular at Greek Peak, just 30 miles from campus.
