Founded in 1852, Tufts University is a private institution located in Medford, Massachusetts. The university offers students the experience of a small liberal arts college with the resources of a major research institution. Tufts is widely known for its commitment to academic excellence and contributions to innovation and research. Notable alumni include American business executive and Carbon CEO Ellen Kullman, Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan, and eBay founder Pierre Omidyar.
Ranked 28 in the nation, Tufts is a very selective school. Its acceptance rate is 16%, and its graduation rate is 93%. Tufts has four campus locations in Medford, Boston, Grafton, and Talloires, France. While students spend ample time on their studies, they also enjoy relaxing on the Prez Lawn, or perusing the university’s signature art collections of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and John Singer Sargent. Or, they might participate in one of Tufts’ longstanding traditions, such as painting the Cannon, celebrating Tuftonia’s Day, or marking the beginning of their Tufts’ experience at the Illumination Ceremony. All freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus. Students can participate in 300 undergraduate organizations and 30 graduate and professional organizations. These include cycling or singing a cappella with the Beelzebubs. About half of the student body participates in study abroad programs, and approximately a quarter of students are affiliated with Greek life. Tufts’ official mascot, Jumbo the elephant, is the only school mascot to appear in Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary. The town of Medford offers the charm and convenience of a suburb, and it provides easy access to the resources, nightlife, and history of Boston.
