The University of Iowa College of Law was founded in 1865 in Iowa City, Iowa. This is a public institution with an acceptance rate of 42.51%. The application fee is currently waived for all applicants. To enter the program in fall of 2021 there were 1,461 applications, 621 acceptances, and 153 students enrolled. There are many formal combined degree options for those interested in a dual degree, but JD students are welcome to pursue a second degree in nearly any graduate program at the university. This provides immense freedom for students whose interests span many disciplines. In recent years, students have earned dual degrees in journalism, history, social work, art history, higher education, and library and information science.

There are nine concentrations at the University of Iowa including Business, Corporate & Transactional Law, Civil Litigation & Alternative Dispute Resolution, Constitutional Law & Civil Rights, Criminal Law, Family & Health Law and more. The school has a student/faculty ratio of just 7 to 1.

Students may participate in pro bono work as early as their first semester on campus. In the summer, they may experience the Summer Legal Placement program to gain real-world legal experience. Additionally, second- and third-year students can participate in the Law Clinic which includes six unique practice areas. The school also offers a semester-long placement program in Washington, D.C.

On campus, there are many student-led groups to explore including the Environmental Law Society and the Animal League Defense Fund.

98.54% of students have found employment within ten months of graduation and earn an average salary of $83,033. Most students work in Iowa, Illinois, or Minnesota.

94.93% of those who take the bar exam pass it within two years of graduation. 40 graduates from the class of 2021 are employed in small law firms (250 or less) and 21 are employed in large law firms (251 and more). 117 are employed in a position where passing the bar is required. 10 are employed in a position where a JD is an advantage. 32 hold clerkship placements (8 at the federal level and 24 at the state, local, or territorial level). 8 are employed in business or industry, 15 are employed in government, 9 are employed in public interest, and 2 are employed in academia.

Iowa City has been named the number three top city for college graduates by the Business Insider. There are many sporting events, bookstores, business opportunities, and a “distinct civic spirit.” For those who are interested in politics, the city is full of presidential hopefuls.
